Content Exposure Level (CEL)

Every post and every page on Mispache carries a Content Exposure Level: a plain number from 0 to 21 that says how intense its content is. It is there so you can tell at a glance what you are about to open, without anyone deciding for you what you are allowed to see.

CEL is a guideline for content maturity, not a legal age classification, and it is not a judgment about whether something belongs on the site. Content that breaks the rules is removed no matter what number it wears. What the number describes is what a reasonable person should expect to run into: language, violence, sexual content, disturbing material, and so on.

The scale is a continuum, not a menu. Any whole number from 0 to 21 is a real level, and the named points below are the familiar landmarks along it. A level wears the name of the highest landmark at or below it, which is why 18, 19 and 20 are all called Explicit Adult. Values between landmarks exist so that "a little past PG-13" can be said exactly instead of approximately.

The scale

Your own level

You also have a CEL of your own, set when you joined and changeable any time in your settings. It is your baseline: the intensity you would normally like to see. It does not change what you post, and every post you write starts at the site default of 13 until you say otherwise.

Being an adult is not the same as wanting 18 all day

A high baseline is easy to read as the grown-up choice. It is not. Most of what fills an ordinary day, and most of what ordinary manners are made of, sits between 12 and 16: a disagreement, a bad day at work, an injury in the news, a joke that lands wrong, a friend describing something awful that happened to them. The 18 to 20 range is explicit on purpose, and it is a small part of most days, if it is any part at all.

So set the baseline where the ordinary part of your day sits, not where your most adventurous evening would. The extreme end is something you go to on purpose, one thing at a time, and the temporary raise is meant to be how you do that. A baseline of 13 is not squeamish, and a baseline of 21 does not say anything about your character.

The blurring, confirm-to-view and temporary raise that go with a baseline are not live yet. Today the number is set and shown, and changes nothing about what reaches you.

If a level looks wrong

Levels are chosen by whoever wrote the post or made the page, and people misjudge them. If one is clearly too low or too high, use the report link on the post and pick "This post/page's CEL is incorrect". That report asks what the level should be and for a single word saying why, such as gore, nudity or violence. A moderator reviews it: nothing is hidden or changed automatically.
